Can LIV Golf Be My New Survivor?
LIV Golf is hosting their third event of the year this weekend. From a purely gaming standpoint, my interest in this new golf league is growing. I could care less about the merger. I'm more concerned about good TV. Today, my thoughts on the league this far and can this reality show replace the love I once had for Survivor?
When I tuned in for my first LIV Golf tournament back in February I didn't have any expectations. What is this new league people are arguing about? Will this be something I'm interested in?
Upon tuning in, it reminded me of Survivor or Big Brother when I was a kid. When the first few seasons of these classic reality TV game shows aired I was a huge fan. I would rush home from church on a Sunday night, sit on the ground, eat McDonald's for dinner, and root for my favorite survivor a.k.a. Rich.
The opening promo had me going. "13 teams, 54 players, who will be the last team standing?!" Wow, could LIV Golf be my new Survivor?
The shotgun start gave me whiplash. Jumping from tee to tee, player to player, my mind couldn't keep up with what was going on. Who is on what hole and what the hell is the score? I had to turn the TV off and return later.
Tuning back in on the final day, my interest was piqued again. What team is winning and who's in the lead? It was entertaining to have both a winning team and player, but there's wasn't much to grip too. Other than the champagne at the end, there wasn't a lot of drama going on.
That may have been the only piece that was missing. The promo was there. Although I had initial whiplash, there was enough interest for me to come back and see who won, but I wasn't curious enough to see what would happen next week.
A few weeks later, I tuned into the Genesis Invitational, curious to see Tiger play. But Tiger had the flu. As I sat on the couch I asked myself - where is the shotgun start, the music? This golf seems so boring. What had happened to me?
I can't say it gives me the rush of an old Survivor - yet. No one is getting voted off the island and the stakes aren't growing each week. What's done is done and you have to make due with where you are in the standings. I don’t think they've figured it out yet but they have my attention.
Can they keep it?
